DAEL

A foundation under the growth of a group of installation companies

DAEL Groep grew by acquisition. To automate further, the source data had to be right first: onboarding, role changes and offboarding from a single version of the truth.

Grown fast, and the basis no longer held

DAEL Groep is a varied group of installation companies, active in climate systems, telecoms, security and inspection. Through acquiring specialised companies and bringing them together under one roof, DAEL has grown into a strong player in the installation sector, with each company bringing its own expertise, from solar panel installation to inspections and complex network infrastructure.

As ICT Manager, Wilvert Blaauwendraad works on bringing all those companies together into one streamlined IT organisation. But as he puts it himself: the organisation had grown fast, and many processes were still manual. In user management especially, control was missing. Accounts were not always created on time, procedures were inconsistent and the data in AFAS and Microsoft 365 did not match.

What they wanted: the basis first, then the rest

Reliable source data was essential to make further automation possible. If the basis is not right, you only get more problems. So DAEL wanted to set up the onboarding, role change and offboarding process properly first, from a single version of the truth, and only then build further.

That is a deliberate order. The wish to connect more target systems in time was certainly there, but according to Wilvert it is important to lay the basis properly first, especially in an organisation where many other projects are running at the same time.

“Things could be arranged quickly and the flexibility within the IAM process was a real plus for us. It can go in many directions, and what is in place simply works.”
Wilvert Blaauwendraad, ICT Manager at DAEL

What was built: AFAS connected to Active Directory and Entra ID

Together with Joinly, DAEL automated the onboarding, role change and offboarding process. By connecting AFAS as a reliable source to Active Directory and Entra ID, user accounts are now created, adjusted or deactivated automatically on the basis of HR changes. Email addresses are created and assigned to groups automatically, there is insight into licences, access rights and provisioning, and standardisation allowed security to go up, such as 2FA for everyone.

One part Wilvert mentions separately is the user comparison: a comparison between the HR system and Active Directory. With it, DAEL quickly saw where the differences between AFAS and Microsoft were. That gave a lot of insight and control, before anything was automated.

Today: a foundation to build on

With Joinly IAM as a solid basis, DAEL is now building a mature IT landscape. Previously there was barely an IT department; now one is being built. Because the source data is right, DAEL can get to work on role profiles, dynamic groups per company and further security.

DAEL found working with Joinly pleasant and direct. Things could be arranged quickly, and the flexibility within the IAM process was a plus: it can go in many directions, and what is in place simply works. From here DAEL can take further steps to automate the IAM process and, as a next step, look at connecting various target systems.
